The Counsellor in
Stroud & Online

'
In therapy, the focus is on you as the client.
However, choosing a counsellor may seem a
little daunting. Below is some infirmation about
me to help you see what I may be able to
offer you.'

Way of working

'As a counsellor, (as well as a human being), I
think that the relationship between me and each
individual is really important. I am not there to
judge you, but rather to help you explore your
issues; gain an increased understanding of
yourself;and to help and support you through
any changes you may wish to make.

I understand that therapy can be challenging;
and I work to create a safe space in which we
can look at these difficult issues together.
Having a neutral space, in which to work, can in
itself be helpful; and confidentiality is also
important for the counselling process.

I believe that therapy can be an empowering
process.

Experienced counsellor

I have worked with people from a wide range of
backgrounds, on a wide range of issues, since I
began counselling in 1996. While I have spent
the majority of my time in general practice, I
have also had two years experience in the drugs
field. As well as working with individuals, I also
work with couples, having trained and worked in
Relate as a couples counsellor.

I have worked as a counsellor in the past for
around five years in NHS Primary Care Mental
Health / IAPT services; and for a couple of
years in NHS occupational health services.
Now my focus is exclusively on my private
practice in Stroud.

My experience includes work on relationships;
stress; depression; anxiety; bereavement and
other forms of loss; identity; abuse; trauma;
self-esteem; and adoption issues. I am
experienced with both brief therapy and
long term open-ended work.

I also have an interest in mindfulness, having
studied and practised this for over forty years.
We can incorporate mindfulness work into
therapy where suitable.

Qualified Counsellor

I became a qualified counsellor in 1998. My
major trainings are listed below.

BACP Accredited Counsellor

I am an Accredited Member of the British
Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy -
MBACP (Accred), (accredited since 2010).

Becoming an Accredited Member of the BACP
involved demonstrating that I have
consolidated my clinical experience, training
and expertise over a period of time since
qualifying; and that I work as an experienced
psychodynamic counsellor in a safe,
competent and ethical way.'
