The Counsellor

'
In therapy, the focus is on you as the client. However, choosing a counsellor may seem a little daunting. Below is some infirmation about me to help you see what I may be able to offer you.

Way of working

As a counsellor, (as well as a human being), I think that the relationship between me and each individual is really important. I am not there to judge you, but rather to help you explore your issues; gain an increased understanding of yourself; and to help and support you through any changes you may wish to make.

I understand that therapy can be challenging; and I work to create a safe space in which we can look at these difficult issues together. Having a neutral space, in which to work, can in itself be helpful; and confidentiality is also important for the counselling process.

I believe that therapy can be an empowering process.

Experience

I have worked with people from a wide range of backgrounds, on a wide range of issues, since I began counselling in 1996. While I have spent the majority of my time in general practice, I have also had two years experience in the drugs field. As well as working with individuals, I also work with couples, having trained and worked in Relate as a couples counsellor.

Currently as well as my private practice in Stroud, I work one day a week as a counsellor for NHS Primary Care Mental Health / IAPT services in Hounslow, London. In the past, I have spent three years full time in other similar NHS / IAPT services.

My experience includes work on relationships; depression; anxiety; stress; bereavement and other forms of loss; identity, including transgender issues; abuse; trauma; self-esteem; and adoption issues. I am experienced with both brief therapy and long term open-ended work.

I also have an interest in mindfulness, having studied and practised this for over forty years. We can incorporate mindfulness work into therapy where suitable.

Qualifications & Training

I became a qualified counsellor in 1998. My major trainings are listed below.

BSc - Psychology - 1975
BSc (Econ) - Social Philosophy - 1995
Diploma in Counselling, (person-centred / existential) - 1998
Post Graduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Counselling - 2007

Training at the Anna Freud Centre for Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy - 2010
Relate training as couples counsellor - 2008-2009
CBT training in the NHS - 2009-2010

BACP Accredited Counsellor

I am an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy - MBACP (Accred).

Becoming an Accredited Member of the BACP involved demonstrating that I have consolidated my clinical experience, training and expertise over a period of time since qualifying; and that I work as an experienced psychodynamic counsellor in a safe, competent and ethical way.'
